New classrooms at De Kleurdoos Nursery School

Looking through the 15 April 2015 edition of the Belgian Public Procurement Bulletin, one call for tender, involving the construction of four new classrooms using timber-frame construction or another option of the successful candidate’s choice within a construction time of 60 working days, immediately caught our attention.
Four more classrooms and additional toilet facilities were needed to cope with the annual influx of toddlers. At the start of the 2015‑2016 school year, there were 314 toddlers at De Kleurdoos Nursery School, spread across the 14 existing classrooms. After autumn half-term, they were joined by 31 more children. There was a lot of pressure on the nursery’s management to expand, and therefore the client and the architect, needing to meet the required 60‑working-day construction time, chose a prefabricated modular construction. Timber-frame construction was selected from the various modular options because of its sustainability, thermal insulation properties and eco-friendly characteristics. The new build was made to blend as seamlessly as possible into the school grounds and finished using the same colour scheme as the existing buildings.
