De Mandel builds 40 service flats for older people
To alleviate the shortage of social housing for older people, De Mandel built 40 social service flats in Rumbeke’s Zilverberg neighbourhood, just beyond the ring road. The 40 housing units are next door to the recently-built De Zilverberg residential care home and service centre. Care provider Zorgbedrijf Roeselare’s residential care home and service centre provides a solution for the tenants of the 40 apartments who want to keep leading independent lives while using the ‘social restaurant’ (a catering outlet offering affordable meals to those on low incomes) or other services provided by the De Zilverberg residential care home and service centre.
The design, produced by the architects at Architectuurbureau Vaneeckhout, features four separate complexes that blend seamlessly into the open, green surroundings. Each complex comprises 10 apartments. Every block includes two one-bedroom apartments, each of them suitable for one or two occupants. The flats come complete with all mod cons and have an E‑level of below 70. Timber-frame construction, supplied and installed by Machiels Building Solutions, was used for the whole of the upward extension.
