New accommodation building La Lisière
For the Massembre holiday domain, focused on social tourism with youth and family holidays and camps, the client Massembre ASBL asked Stramien CV to draw up a master plan to respond to changing demands and to address the need for more comfort in the aging buildings.
To provide higher quality, the four oldest pavilions, were demolished and replaced by a new building, La Lisière (the forest edge), featuring 26 comfortable four-person rooms and two multipurpose spaces.
The new building, entirely constructed with a timber frame by Machiels Building Solutions, offers a variant of the proven concept that aims to increase comfort levels. All rooms open directly onto the wide walkway that runs around the entire building, with an entrance on the north side and a terrace on the south side offering stunning views of the valley. Each floor has one fully accessible room, and staircases are provided on both sides. A footbridge offers level access from the higher road directly to the walkway on the upper floor.
Heating in the rooms and sanitary facilities is controlled by a heat pump connected to a new geothermal field consisting of 14 deep boreholes, from which ‘caloric’ energy is extracted (or returned) to generate heat (in the rooms via warm air from fan coil units). In addition, solar panels have been installed on the roof.
The choice for a timber frame construction was no coincidence. Wood is not only a warm and natural building material but also one of the most sustainable choices in the construction sector. Wood requires much less energy for production and transport compared to traditional materials like concrete and steel. Reinforced concrete, for example, requires eight times more energy than wood. In a sector responsible for about 38% of global CO₂ emissions, such a choice truly makes a difference.
The construction work started in November 2024, and in early June 2025, the first guests were welcomed for the summer holidays!
