New-build passive multifunctional building
In 2010, Heusden-Zolder municipal council started drawing up plans to restore and repurpose the winding engine building at the former mining site in the municipality. The new-build component aspires to the passive house standard, meaning it will have minimal energy consumption. The building is airtight and insulated effectively with cellulose fibres, insulating glazing and roof insulation. The existing part has been fitted with additional internal insulation and insulating double window frames. A deliberate choice was made to use sustainable building materials. The building shell’s timber-frame components use wood with the FSC label. The metal façade cladding has patina and oxide protection and is 100% recyclable. This is interspersed in places with fibre-cement façade cladding.
