Corner buildings at Ghent Brugse Poort demolished for residential care project The Lodge

On Imbofisc’s behalf, three old corner buildings in Ghent have been demolished to make space for The Lodge, a new residential care project where those diagnosed with autism can live with non-disabled people in a customised home comprising 14 care units. The Lodge was designed by DENC!-STUDIO.
A hybrid structure had been chosen for the project: load-bearing, timber-frame outer walls (from Machiels Building Solutions) and precast concrete (in plank form) mezzanine levels. Timber frames provide for decent thermal insulation without thick walls.
Low-energy new build
The existing buildings were in very poor condition and had ceased to meet current sustainability standards, so have been replaced with a low-energy new build. Functional cores make it possible to concentrate internal services on a small surface area and cut piping and cabling costs.
